Michigan rolls to another Big Ten title with win over Purdue, moves to 13-0

INDIANAPOLIS -- Donovan Edwards ran for 185 yards and a score, J.J. McCarthy threw three touchdown passes and No. 2 Michigan beat Purdue 43-22 on Saturday night for its second straight Big Ten title and a likely No. 2 playoff seed. College footballs winningest program has the first 13-win season in school history. Two more victories would give the Wolverines (13-0, No. 2 CFP) their first national championship since 1997. And with injured star Blake Corum sidelined by a season-ending left knee injury, Edwards stole the show for the second straight week. After shredding rival Ohio State for 216 yards and two scores last week, Edwards broke open this game with a 60-yard run on the first play of the second half to set up one score. He added a 27-yard TD sprint on Michigans next series to make it 28-13. Purdue (8-5) never recovered from Michigans quick, seven-play onslaught after it trailed 14-13 at halftime. But quarterback Aidan...

After three fights and 36 rounds between future Hall of Famers, the rivalry betweenJuan Francisco Estrada and Roman Chocolatito Gonzalez still isnt quite settled. Estrada defeated Gonzalez via majority decision on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona, to retain his lineal 115-pound championship, but the result was far from convincing. Saturday marked the third fight between the rivals, with Gonzalez taking a unanimous decision in their November 2012 bout and Estrada winning a split decision in March 2021.

UChicagos Julianne Sitch first woman to coach NCAA mens soccer team to title

Julianne Sitch became the first woman to coach a mens soccer program to an NCAA championship when she led the University of Chicago past Williams College 2-0 in the Division III title game Saturday. Sitch, a former star player for DePaul and the NWSLs Chicago Red Stars, guided the top-seeded Maroons to a 22-0-1 record in her first year as coach. The shutout win Saturday comes just eight months after Sitch returned to Chicago as head coach after serving two previous stints as an assistant with the team. It was the first NCAA mens soccer title in the programs history and capped a season in which the Maroons set a school record for wins. Sitch is one of only two women coaching a mens NCAA soccer team in Division III (NYUs Kim Wyant is the other). The credit goes to the team, Sitch said after the win in Salem, Virginia. I mean, these guys have never had a female coach before, and they embraced me as one of their own. For me, that will forever be a grateful moment. Just to...

Cade Klubnik lifts Clemson to ACC title; DJ Uiagalelei benched early

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Clemsonbenched starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei after two series in the ACC championship game against North Carolinaon Saturday, turning to backup Cade Klubnik to provide a spark. Klubnik did just that, going 10-of-11 for 149 yards and a touchdown in the first half. He was eventually pulled in the fourth quarter after staking the Tigers to a big lead, finishing 20-of-24 for 309 total yards and two total touchdowns. Clemson rolled 39-10 to win its seventh ACC title in eight seasons. Uiagalelei struggled from the start, going 2-of-5 for 10 yards. Both his drives ended in three-and-outs. His starting status was the subject of questions throughout the week after he struggled in a 31-30 loss to South Carolina. Coach Dabo Swinney said repeatedly in the week leading up to the ACC championship game that Uiagalelei would start against the Tar Heels and deflected blame from him in the loss, pointing to turnovers and drops from...

Browns Watson showing progress in treatment program, sources say

As part of the conditions that enabled Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson to be reinstated and be able to play Sunday against the Houston Texans, he has made what NFL and NFLPA experts have described as signs of progress during his mandatory treatment program, per league sources. Though his 11-game suspension is now over, Watson is expected to remain in his treatment program with no end date in sight at this time, sources told ESPN. Hes been progressing well and he wants to continue with it, and they feel its helping him, one source connected to Watsons treatment program said. Its just sort of ongoing as needed and itll be ongoing until its not needed anymore. And I think its given him a lot of help and support. But this could take a while. The program is considered confidential, and Watson did not shed light on his treatment last week. He declined to address his treatment during his news conference last week leading up to his return...

Colorado Buffaloes name Deion Sanders as head coach

Deion Sanders will be the next coach at Colorado, the school announced Saturday night, instantly making him one of the most compelling hires in college football this generation. Sanders comes with just three years experience coaching college football, as he went 27-5 as Jackson States coach. Jackson State (12-0) completed an undefeated regular season Saturday with a 43-24 blowout of Southern for the SWAC championship. Sanders informed his team of his departure soon after Saturdays win.He is still slated to coach Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl on Dec. 17 against North Carolina Central, sources told ESPN. Sanders arrival delivers a much-needed adrenaline shot to a Colorado program that has had two winning seasons since 2005 and losing seasons in five of the past six years. Since 2005, Colorado has churned through the forgettable tenures of Karl Dorrell, Mel Tucker, Mike MacIntyre, Jon Embree, Dan Hawkins and Gary Barnett. With Sanders arrival, Colorado will...

Leafs Marner pushes NHLs longest active point streak to 19 games

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner set a franchise record in extending his point streak to 19 games Saturday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The winger scored a short-handed goal early in the second period against the Lightning to reach his milestone and give Toronto a 1-0 lead. He later scored a power-play goal in the third period of the Maple Leafs 4-3 overtime loss. Its cool, Marner said. I grew up in the city. I love being part of this team nowadays. Its special to me. Its special growing up to watch this team play hockey. Now to have my name on something amazing, its hard to describe. His streak began in the Maple Leafs overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 27. It is the longest active streak in the NHL. Marner previously matched the franchise-high 18-game mark set by Darryl Sittler (1977-78) and Eddie Olczyk (1989-90) with an empty-net goal in Torontos win last Wednesday over the Sharks. Both Sittler and Olczyk...

Dominant Georgia continues perfect season with SEC title

ATLANTA -- No. 1 Georgias place in the College Football Playoff was secure even before it beat No. 14 LSU50-30 to win the SEC championship game Saturday. But Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart and quarterback Stetson Bennett werent looking past the importance of a conference title -- not after coming up short last season. A year ago in Atlanta, Georgia lost to Alabama in the SEC title game, before beating the Crimson Tide in the rematch in the CFP national championship game. Winning the SEC is a big deal, Bennett said. This is the best conference in football. The national championship is huge and a big deal -- thats our next goal. The SEC is the first goal. Bennett threw two interceptions in last seasons SEC title-game loss. Against LSU on Saturday, he was almost flawless, completing 23 of 29 passes for 274 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. I had several people come up to me and say they thought he played the best game of his career tonight,...

Alabamas Nick Saban states CFP case, touts Tides 3-0 finish

With Alabamas College Football Playoff future in limbo, coach Nick Saban said on Saturday that there was an argument for his team to be included among the top four and framed the debate over whos in and whos out with a single question: How are they playing at present? The question lends itself to Alabamas defense, of course. The Crimson Tide, ranked No. 6 by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee last week, have two losses but finished the regular season with three straight wins. Ohio State, ranked No. 5, has only one loss. But that loss -- a 45-23 defeat at home to rival Michigan -- came on the final weekend of the regular season. When No. 4 USClost to No. 11 Utahin the Pac 12 championship game on Friday, it likely opened up a spot among the top four. No. 3 TCU suffered its first loss of the season to Kansas Statein the Big 12 championship game on Saturday. Appearing on ESPNs The College Football Show on...

Tyson Fury dominates Derek Chisora to retain belt

Tyson Fury retained his WBC and lineal heavyweight championship with a one-sided beating of Derek Chisora that was finally stopped by the referee at 2:51 of Round 10 on Saturday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Chisora, who has now lost to Fury three times, never landed a punch of consequence but absorbed plenty of such shots from The Gypsy King in a bout that looked like it should have been stopped much sooner. Chisoras trademark toughness was on display throughout in what amounted to a tuneup bout for Fury, who is in talks to meet Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship in springtime in Saudi Arabia. The unified heavyweight champion from Ukraine was ringside and immediately jumped up on the ring apron after Fury called him out. Youre next you little b----, Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) said as he stood face-to-face with Usyk. Fury then mocked Usyks two victories over Anthony Joshua, whom he described as a mere bodybuilder. Well, Im no bodybuilder...

Sonny Dykes says TCU belongs in CFP despite OT loss to Kansas State

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Shortly after No. 3 TCUs first loss of the season, a 31-28 overtime defeat in the Big 12 championship game to No. 10 Kansas State, Sonny Dykes said he is confident the Horned Frogs deserve a spot in the College Football Playoff when the selection committees rankings are revealed tomorrow. For sure I do, Dykes said. We went through the Big 12 12-0. ... I dont think we should be punished for coming to the Big 12 championship game. I dont think the conference championship games are designed to punish teams and prevent them from getting in the playoffs. We were [No.] 3 last week. My hope is that we would stay at 3 and go tee it up and see how we do. TCU, like it has several times this season, fell behind Kansas State and trailed 28-17 early in the fourth quarter. But behind quarterback Max Duggan, the Horned Frogs mounted a wild comeback to tie the game at 28-28 with 1:51 left in regulation. In overtime, Duggan scrambled for what looked like...

TCU suffers overtime loss to Kansas State in Big 12 title game

Ty Zentner kicked a 31-yard field goal in overtime as 10th-ranked Kansas State beat No. 3 TCU 31-28 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, leaving the Horned Frogs to wait another day to find out if they had done enough to get into the four-team College Football Playoff. The Wildcats set up the winning field goal after TCU (12-1) had the opening possession of overtime and Kendre Miller was stopped short on consecutive plays from inside the 1. Deuce Vaughn ran for 130 yards and a touchdown and Will Howard threw two touchdown passes for the Wildcats (10-3), who six weeks earlier had jumped out to a 28-10 lead early in the second quarter before TCU scored the games last 28 points. That was one of five games the Horned Frogs (12-1) won when trailing after halftime. But they couldnt do it again with the chance to guarantee being the first Big 12 team other than Oklahoma to make the playoff. We got beat today, and now its out of...

This week, he participated in his first full week of action before the team made the final decision on his availability. I wouldnt say I feel rusty, Im getting back on my feet. Mavericks blow out old friend Jalen Brunson, Knicks at MSG

NEW YORK -- Luka Doncic came into Madison Square Garden today wearing a Philadelphia Eagles jersey -- a payment on a lost bet to his former teammate, Jalen Brunson, whom he and the Mavericks faced for the first time here Saturday afternoon since Brunson signed with the Knicks as a free agent in the offseason. No, it wasnt, Doncic said when asked if it was enjoyable paying off his bet. That, however, was one of the few things Doncic did not enjoy about his day, as the Mavericks obliterated Brunson and the Knicks in the second half, outscoring New York 69-40 to pull away and claim a 121-100 win over their former teammate and his new squad. Youve got to ask them, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said when asked if facing Brunson was any sort of motivating factor for his players. I think theyve been with him four years, those guys in that locker room. Theyre going to miss him. Those are friends in that locker room that he hangs out with in the summer, and he has a...

Los Angeles Rams put QB Matthew Stafford on injured reserve

LOS ANGELES -- The Rams have placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve. Stafford would be eligible to return to the active roster in Week 17. Stafford has not played since he injured his neck in the Rams Week 11 loss to the New Orleans Saints, a game he left after being evaluated for a concussion. Coach Sean McVay later said Stafford felt some numbness in his legs after taking a hit in that game. Stafford cleared the concussion protocol on Friday. Stafford was playing against the Saints just two days after he was initially cleared from the concussion protocol. Stafford first entered the concussion protocol on Nov. 8 after the Rams medical staff determined that they felt like that was the best thing for him, according to McVay. McVay said the day after Stafford entered the concussion protocol that he didnt have any indication during the game that Stafford was dealing with concussion symptoms. He said some of the questions Stafford was...

Wades hot hand fuels Heat past struggling Warriors

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Dwyane Wade knew a sprained wrist wouldnt be enough to keep him out of a game. The fact that he delivered his best shooting performance of the season with it might have been a bit of a surprise. Wade shook off the injured wrist to score 35 points and the Miami Heat rolled past the Golden State Warriors, 115-102 on Wednesday night. I felt like it made me focus a little more, Wade said. I shot the ball pretty well. I tried to focus a lot more on my shot because when you have a wrist you cant bend all the way, your shot can come up short a lot. I made sure I did my job and put it over the rim and followed through with it. Wade shot 10 for 15 from the field -- his highest percentage this season. He also made all 15 free throws, the most hes ever made in a game without a miss. He added nine assists and seven rebounds to help the Heat bounce back from a loss Monday in Utah. Dwyane has done this many times before, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said....

Warriors Draymond Green says he appreciates fans pledge to match fine

SAN FRANCISCO -- Following Draymond Greens$25,000 fine for cursing at a fan earlier this week, the fan defended Green and even pledged to match the fine for charity. Green was fined by the NBA on Thursday for directing obscene language toward a fan during the Warriors 116-113 loss to the Dallas Mavericks the night before. Shortly after the fine was announced, Dallas resident Alykhan Rehmatullah took to Twitter to name himself as the fan who had the exchange with Green and even defended the Warriors star, writing in his tweet, Shouldnt be like that, we were just having fun. Ill match the $25k to your favorite charity or NBA Cares. Your call. Rehmatullah told ESPN on Friday night that he didnt agree with the fine because he didnt take offense to Greens language. Because of that, we can make light of the situation, do some good, make a donation, Rehmatullah said. Make it charitable ... [fan decorum] is a sensitive topic, but its not always as...

LeBron James passes Magic Johnson for 6th all time in assists

MILWAUKEE -- LeBron James moved past Magic Johnson on the NBAs all-time assists list while wearing a Los Angeles Lakers uniform Friday, but he knows his place in the pecking order when it comes to Laker lore. To know that Im in the conversation or about to get to a point that Im breaking a record that he set for this franchise -- and Im not comparing myself to Magic with this franchise, what he did, sheesh. Him, [James] Worthy, Kobe [Bryant], Shaq [ONeal], those guys are synonymous with this franchise. But its just pretty cool, always, when Im able to see my name with some of the greats that have played this game, James told ESPN this week when asked about the accomplishment he was approaching. James set the mark with his ninth assist against the Milwaukee Bucks with 8:41 remaining in the fourth quarter, finding Anthony Davis for a 3-pointer on the right wing that gave L.A. a 112-108 lead. The Lakers held on to win 133-129, beating a...

Utah repeats as Pac-12 champs, knocks USC out of playoff

LAS VEGAS -- The only blemish in USCs11-win regular season had been a one-point loss to Utahin October. Thanks to the Pac-12s decision to turn its championship game into a matchup between its two best teams instead of division winners, the Trojans had an opportunity to make that loss moot and advance to their first College Football Playoff appearance in Lincoln Rileys first season as head coach. But one blemish turned into two on Friday night, as No. 11 Utah played spoiler and proved it has USCs number this season. The Utes scored 24 straight points at one point and went on to dominate No. 4 USC 47-24 to win their second straight Pac-12 title and likely keep the Trojans out of the fourth playoff spot. You come as far as this team has come and this program has come in the last 12 months, and obviously to not get it done, its a tough pill to swallow, Riley said after the game. They were definitely the better team tonight. They deserved it. Our players...

Heats Jimmy Butler returns in style, buries Celtics in OT win

BOSTON -- Jimmy Butler, back after missing seven games with a sore right knee, played his first game at TD Garden since his masterpiece in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals back in May. And while Butler might not have been quite that impressive in his return Friday night, he still finished with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists in 36 minutes for the Miami Heat, who survived a miraculous shot in the final seconds by Jaylen Brown to win a 120-116 thriller in overtime over the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics. Hes such a winning player, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. I feel like through the first three quarters I didnt run a play for him. He just finds a way to compete and help your team win. It had looked like Butler had closed the door on the Celtics when he made baskets on back-to-back possessions inside the final minute of regulation -- the first coming off an assist from Kyle Lowry, and the second after...

Sources: Deion Sanders preparing to accept Colorado coaching job

Jackson Statecoach Deion Sanders has been preparing to make an exit in order to take the head coaching job at Colorado, sources told ESPN on Friday. An announcement is expected late Saturday or early Sunday, sources told ESPNs Adam Rittenberg. With Jackson State on the cusp of the SWAC title game Saturday, Sanders and his associates have spent the week making inquiries to both potential members of his on-field staff and support staff at Colorado, pitching them to join him in Boulder, sources said. A source told ESPN on Friday night that Sanders outreach included a call to a prominent player in the NCAA transfer portal, encouraging him to not make a decision because Sanders was heading to Colorado and wanted to recruit him there. A different source close to a player committed to play at Colorado said that earlier this week a current Jackson State staff member called to check in on the players Colorado commitment. He also asked him for some film of the player to...

Sources: Rangers, Jacob deGrom agree to 5-year, $185M deal

Two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom agreed to a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers, sources told ESPN, bringing the most talented pitcher in baseball to a pitching-starved organization that is making massive free agent investments for the second straight offseason. The Rangers announced the deal on Friday night, but did not disclose terms. The 34-year-old deGrom, who has spent all nine seasons of his major league career with the New York Mets, opted out of the final two years of his contract despite throwing just 64 innings in 2022. He missed the first four months of the season with a stress reaction in his shoulder, and injuries had limited him to 224 innings over the past three seasons. Texas looked past those issues and to the potential for deGrom to be a transformative figure in the organization. He shattered industry-wide expectations of a shorter-term deal with the five-year package that sources said includes a sixth-year...

Memo: SEC didnt prohibit hiring of Hugh Freeze in 2018

In 2018 when several SEC schools were interested in hiring Hugh Freeze, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey sent out a memorandum to conference presidents, chancellors and athletic directors to inform them of Freezes status with respect to the conference. Freeze was hired Tuesday as Auburns head football coach. While Sankeys 2018 memo, which was obtained by ESPN, did not prohibit schools from hiring Freeze, it was a stern reminder of the conditions and restrictions related to Freeze if an SEC school had chosen to hire him at that point. Per NCAA penalties, Freeze would have faced a suspension for the first two conference games of the 2018 seaso.
